The International Environmental Communications Association's conference 'Conference on Communication and Environment' was in Hobart in 2025, and it was an incredible opportunity to connect with science communicators, artists, academics and researchers who are working in the field of environmental communication. I was happy to have a number of my artworks and workshop presentations selected for the program! Here's how I was part of the conference:
1. Creating an art gallery of my portfolio
For the first time ever, I displayed my portfolio in a gallery format and had a bunch of stickers and zines for sale. My works included graphic recordings I'd done for COP29 and COP29, Guardian comics, poster art, report illustration work and infographics, merchandise design and comic commissions to drive action on environmental issues. I'd never seen my work laid out like that - I was pretty stoked to set it up for others to enjoy!
2. Running a 'Comic Art for environmental storytelling and behaviour change' workshop
This was so much fun! This workshop explored how to use the comic art form to communicate environmental messages and drive people to action. Apart from creating our own comics we also did some fun warm up activities to free our creative juices and start thinking visually. It was a blast!
3. Bringing science and art together by collaborating Professor Euan Richie for Australia's dingoes
Euan and I have been chatting for a while about combining our skills (and passion for environmental conservation) to create new ways of communicating ecological issues.
Euan brought his expertise on Australia's dingoes and I brought my art skills together for this presentation which was well received. We hope to do more collabs like this!
